Explosive Athletes Dominate the
Bayou NUC Comes to
Dutchtown HS, Baton Rouge, LA
The
National Underclassmen Combine hit the home of the National
Championship LSU Tigers recently, with a stop at Dutchtown
High School in the Baton Rouge area.The stop did not disappoint, as there were a number
of amazing performances.Leading the way was Overall MVP sophomore RB DJ Lewis
of Haynesville High School, who also took home the Fastest
Man Award.
Lewis,
5-foot-9 and 188-pounds, is a fabulous all-around athlete,
who showed great feet and skills during the 1-on-1’s.He also excelled during the combine events with a
36.5-inch vertical, 10’0 1/2” broad, 4.60 shuttle, 23 reps
on 155-pounds, and a 4.41 40, which was the fastest time of
the event.
Lewis
was not the only running back to excel in Baton Rouge.Winning the Freshman MVP was Derrick Milton of
Pineville High School, who is definitely a name to remember.Milton, 5-foot-10 and 190-pounds, was a man
amongst boys throughout the event, and showed that off
during the combine events with a 32-inch vertical, 10’0 1/2”
broad, 4.51 shuttle, 4.53 40, and 31 reps on 135-pounds.And taking home the RB MVP was sophomore Thomas
Gumpert of St. Thomas More High School.Gumpert, 5-foot-11 and 179-pounds, showed great speed
and footwork during both the individual drills and 1-on-1’s.He also had a 30-inch vertical, 4.49 40, 4.62
shuttle, 8’7 1/2” broad, and 22 reps on 155-pounds.
Notre
Dame High School took home both the LB MVP and the DB MVP.The DB MVP went to sophomore Hunter Stover, who is
more of a prototypical safety prospect at 6-foot-0 and
202-pounds.
Even at that size, he still showed great cover skills and
athleticism.
During the combine events he had a 4.73 40, 8’5” broad, 4.34
40, 24.5-inch vertical, and 13 reps on 155-pounds.Winning the LB award was sophomore DJ Welter, who at
6-foot-0 and 214-pounds, really showed the complete package.Welter is an amazing athlete, who showed impressive
strength and cover skills during the individual drills and
1-on-1’s.He
also had a 9’0” broad, 29-inch vertical, 4.48 40, 4.48
shuttle, and 20 reps on 155-pounds.Another linebacker who stood out during the event was
sophomore Orrin Fontenot of Parkview Baptist High School.Fontenot, 6-foot-1 and 230-pounds, is an extremely
powerful prospect who has the potential to be a big-time
recruit.He
also had a 27.5-inch vertical, 4.52 shuttle, 4.68 40, and 29
reps on 155-pounds.
Taking
home two awards was sophomore OL Chance Fayko of Barbe High
School.Faykoe,
6-foot-0 and 301-pounds, was named the OL MVP and the
Strongest Man, the later coming for his 21 reps on
185-pounds.
Aside from his strength, he also demonstrated great hands,
explosion, and overall skills during the 1-on-1’s.Fayko also had a 5.67 40 and 5.43 shuttle during the
combine events.
Winning the Leadership Award for Barbe High School was
sophomore RB Michael Gullary.Guillary, 5-foot-10 and 212-pounds, is an excellent
athlete and leader, who also possesses great footwork and
explosion.He
also had a 29.5-inch vertical, 9’0” broad, 4.69 40, 4.62
shuttle, and 20 reps on 155-pounds.
Also
winning two awards in Baton Rouge was Zachary High School,
with both the WR MVP and the DL MVP.The WR MVP went to sophomore Nick Hopkins, 5-foot-10
and 171-pounds, who outside of showcasing impressive hands,
feet, and route running ability, also hustled and showed
great work ethic throughout the event.He also had a 4.72 40, 4.45 shuttle, and 25.5-inch
vertical.
Winning the DL MVP was sophomore Stan Williams.Williams, 5-foot-11 and 211-pounds, is a fabulous
athlete with great hands, quickness, feet, and individual
skills.The
lineman had a 23-inch vertical, 4.95 40, and 4.76 shuttle.
QB MVP
was Orlan Lockhart III, who from Sam houston HS, LA, stood
6-0.5, 201 with a 29 vert, 4.92 40, 4.60 shuttle, 15 reps on
155, and showed good athleticism and a great drop and
delivery.
The
Combine King for Freshman was Leon Blovin of Dutchtown HS
who had great athleticism with at 4.67 40, great completion
percentage from his QB spot and great poise.
