Bergen Catholic's Junior Linebacker Cameron Queiro Picks up First Two Offers
Bergen Catholic (NJ) is known for producing a multitude of division football players. Cameron Queiro looks to be the next in line after picking up his first two offers recently. The first coming from Northwestern and shortly thereafter Vanderbilt offered. The Class of 2014 linebacker was named in NUC's Top 25 for New Jersey's Class of 2014.
Queiro has led his Bergen Catholic squad to a 3-1 start. Bergen Catholic recently had a tough loss to parochial rival St. Joe's (Montvale) 38-37 in an overtime classic. At six feet and 207 pounds, Queiro has great lateral and straight line speed. Queiro displays a good motor and he has the ability to rush the passer from his linebacker position.
Steven Barsamian NUC: First question, you guys are 2-1 how would you say the season is going so far?
Cameron Queiro: Well, it's good but that loss (To St. Joe's) was really crushing. We hoped to go perfect which now we can't do, but now we just have to win the rest of our games one by one
NUC: That St. Joe's game was crazy! What are your thoughts on the game?
CQ: Well we started off way too flat, no energy coming out but we played an incredible second half. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to win. It was probably one of the greatest games in NJ history but it sucks not to win it and it's a lesson.
NUC: You guys played Bishop-Gorman before that. How was the game and the all around experience of traveling there and playing in a new environment?
CQ: I felt the jetlag (laughs) that was new. But it was great, and playing across the country is always different. But we came out fired up and ready to play them and after 2 quarter they couldn't keep pace. It was great
NUC: How was playing in Bishop-Gorman's Stadium?
CQ: I felt like it was a college game. It was amazing in there; a home game in there must be crazy all the time
NUC: What are your thoughts on playing against those out of state teams instead of the Jersey teams?
CQ: It's fun to get out there and everybody sees us. And we get to go around and not play the same kids each year. Also, it makes our schedule that much stronger. I love it
NUC: What are your expectations for your team this season?
CQ: I expect a state championship run this year. We have the dedication and the players to do it and anything less is a failure
NUC: What do you guys have to do to achieve those goals?
CQ: Well pushing each other every day in practice is key, which is what got us far last year and pushing harder will get us farther this year. Also, we need to stay healthy which has been a little troubling for some of us.
NUC: Don Bosco has beaten you guys the past few years in the championship game. How do you guys get past Don Bosco this year?
CQ: Well that's always big; we are looking to just come out energized and ready to go. On special teams we need to make big plays which has killed us in the past but other than that we need to play tough and get momentum early on.
NUC: What would you say your individual goals are for this season?
CQ: Well I am looking to get 50+ tackles, 2 or 3 int/forced fumbles and just any other way I can help the team
NUC: What would you say you have improved since last year?
CQ: I've gotten faster and my frame has gotten bigger, also I play the ball in the air more, as with last year I was hesitant to do that.
NUC: What are your thoughts on being named in the NUC top 25 in NJ for the class of 2014?
CQ: I was ecstatic, it was one of my goals to be the top in my class and hearing about it means I achieved that but the hard work continues from there.
NUC: What are your thoughts on the NUC combines you have attended?
CQ: I thought they were great, I love competing against the best and I invited some teammates to come. It's always a fun experience
NUC: Some personal questions. What is your favorite TV show?
CQ: I'd have to say mine is just anything on ESPN. I don't watch much else
NUC: Favorite type of car?
CQ: I love the new Dodge Dart. Its sort or my dream car when I can get it
NUC: Favorite movie?
CQ: Got to go with Step Brothers very funny movie
NUC: Ok Favorite Sports movie?
CQ: Friday Night Lights. I'm always pumped up after watching that movie
NUC: Great movie. There is something about Texas football and high school football under the lights. Favorite NFL team?
CQ: Yeah it must be crazy. Philadelphia Eagles. We are struggling but we will hold the ball soon and be a problem in our division
NUC: Eagles? Man you must get killed going to school in north jersey.
CQ: yeah, I always like the teams everyone hates.
NUC: Ok favorite NFL player?
CQ: James Harrison. The man is crazy but he plays some good football
NUC: Ok some recruiting stuff. You just picked up an offer from Vanderbilt, how's the recruiting process been going?
CQ: It's been good, everything is coming fast and it is an exciting experience
NUC: What teams have shown the most interest so far that haven't offered?
CQ: I'd say Pitt, Boston College, and NC State. They have been sending the most mail and have wanted me to call them the most
NUC: Ok have any teams told you they were close to offering?
CQ: not yet.
NUC: Your brother (Kyle) has committed to Northwestern and you got your first offer from northwestern, would you say you have any early favorites yet?
CQ: not yet, I have to explore around myself and see before I pick favorites.
NUC: Having your brother already gone through the process how would you that has helped and how has he helped you through the process?
CQ: I got to get sort of a sneak peek of the recruiting process and he taught me not to be nervous but to have fun in the experience
NUC: He's given you a little nudge towards Northwestern right?
CQ: yeah, he always will since he's committed there
NUC: What are some of the things you like about Vandy?
CQ: Well I love rooting for them when they are on TV; they have a great coaching staff and a great place for academics
NUC: Ok what are some of the things you like about Northwestern?
CQ: Well I have heard good things about Chicago, and they have the same good education and good coaching staff and they have been doing well
NUC: How about Pitt?
CQ: Pitt also has some great coaches and it was a lot nicer than I thought, it was great walking around and seeing everything they had to offer. It is also cool how they share a field with the Steelers
NUC: NC State?
CQ: I like how they always are sending me stuff and asking how I am and send me postcards whenever they can, they have been playing good football as well
NUC: Alright BC?
CQ: Boston College is a great place, I love their field and coaches as well and have visited a few times.
NUC: Ok How about Rutgers?
CQ: Rutgers is close which is great, and it is my dad's old school which is nice. They have great coaching in Coach Flood and some star players and it's good to visit
NUC: What would you say your factors will be in choosing a school?
CQ: A good education, a good fit in my lifestyle (somewhere I can picture myself everyday), and a college I know that I can get the best out of me every day at
NUC: Would you say location would be a factor in your decision?
CQ: Not right now, I have to see for myself but I have no opinion on it now
NUC: Do you have any visits planned to any colleges?
CQ: oh well I'm hoping to in the offseason for the ones who have been contacting me but I have nothing planned now
NUC: oh ok. Last question did you have a favorite college team growing up?
CQ: never did, I always liked many different teams
