The
Garden State represented itself
very well during the afternoon
session of this past weekends
National Underclassmen Combine.
This was best demonstrated by
Overall MVP sophomore WR Aaron
Hayward, 6-foot-0 and
185-pounds, of Penns Grove High
School. Hayward, already an
accomplished track star, took
his talents to the football
field and was spectacular during
1-on-1s, ran amazing routes,
had great hands, and had an
overall memorable performance.
He also had a 4.55 40, 4.68
shuttle, 811 broad, and 22
reps at 150-pounds.

The
DL MVP went to sophomore Lance
Miller of Mainland Regional High
School in New Jersey. Miller,
5-foot-10 and 321-pounds, moved
extremely well for a player of
his size and has both great
hands and feet. He also had a
5.15 shuttle, 5.38 40, 73
broad, and did 17 reps at
185-pounds.

Also
excelling at the defensive line
position were sophomore Malcolm
Bush of Hackensack High School
in New Jersey and sophomore Ron
Rose of Hereford High School in
Maryland. Bush, 6-foot-3 ½ and
233-pounds, is a big time D-1
defensive end prospect with
great athleticism and speed. He
had a 28.5-inch vertical, 5.16
40, 86 ½ broad, and 4.61
shuttle. Rose, 6-foot-1 and
219-pounds, had a 4.79 shuttle,
90 broad, 29-inch vertical,
and did 14 reps at 185-pounds.

It
was a two player race for the QB
MVP, with sophomore Steve Zrowka
of St. John Vianney High School
in New Jersey coming out the
winner. Zrowka, 6-foot-0 and
193-pounds, has phenomenal
passing skills and delivery. He
also had a 29.5-inch vertical,
4.65 40, 85 broad, 4.38
shuttle and did 18 reps at
150-pounds.

Just
missing out on the QB MVP was
sophomore Gabe Hernandez of St.
Josephs (Montvale). Hernandez,
6-foot-1 ½ and 166-pounds, has
very impressive passing skills
and touch, plus has an awesome
delivery. He also had a
27.5-inch vertical, 4.88 40,
82 broad, and 4.80 shuttle.

Winning the Freshman MVP was RB
Shawn Wenhold of Upper Perkiomen
High School in Pennsylvania.
Wenhold, 5-foot-7 and
193-pounds, showed great
athleticism and speed during
both the 1-on-1s and positional
drills. He was equally
impressive during the combine
events with a 29-inch vertical,
4.56 40, 4.46 shuttle, and 33
reps at 135-pounds.Another
Pennsylvania freshman who left
his mark was LB Sam Bergen of
East Stroudsburg South. Bergen,
6-foot-0 and 215-pounds, had
great athleticism and hips for a
freshman, plus had a 30.5-inch
vertical, 82 broad, 4.62
shuttle, and did an impressive
39 reps at 135-pounds.

The
OL MVP went to sophomore John
Ceccio of St. Josephs
(Montvale), who both showed
impressive power and technique.
Ceccio, 6-foot-0 and 276-pounds,
had a 21.5-inch vertical, 5.10
40, 4.80 shuttle, 610 broad,
and had 24 reps at 185-pounds.

Kevin
McFall of Butler High School in
New Jersey took home the LB MVP,
as he showed excellent power,
athleticism, and speed. During
1-on-1s he broke up four passes
and did a great job moving his
feet and keeping the running
backs off balance. He also had
a 4.88 40, 4.63 shuttle, 86
broad, 26.5-inch vertical, and
33 reps at 150-pounds.

With
a winning time of 4.53, two
players shared the Fastest Man
Award. Sophomore WR David Wood,
5-foot-11 and 156-pounds, of St.
Josephs (Montvale) was also a
top receiver during drills and
had a 4.24 shuttle and 86
broad. Equaling Woods 4.53 40
was sophomore DB Caleb Portel of
Our Lady of Good Counsel High
School in Maryland. Portel,
5-foot-6 ½ and 177-pounds, was
also excelling during positional
drills and had 18 reps at
150-pounds.

There
were a number of impressive
performances at the wide
receiver position and walking
away with the MVP was sophomore
Jerry Watters of Camden
Catholic. Watters, 5-foot-10
and 165-pounds, is now a
two-time WR MVP award winner,
and once again earned the honor
by catching everything remotely
close to him and continuously
running great routes. Watters
had a 4.68 40, 4.38 shuttle,
92 broad, and 28-inch
vertical.

Pushing Watters throughout the
afternoon were sophomore Derrick
Johnson of Holy Trinity High
School in New York and sophomore
Jamal Clay of Mahwah High School
in New Jersey. Johnson,
5-foot-10 and 156-pounds, has
impressive receiving skills and
runs tremendous routes, plus had
a 27-inch vertical, 4.66 40, and
4.50 shuttle. Clay, 5-foot-9
and 172-pounds, also showed
great athleticism, receiving
skills, and route running. Clay
had a 30-inch vertical, 93 ½
broad, 4.49 shuttle, 4.69 40,
and had 16 reps at 150-pounds.
 
The
RB MVP went to sophomore Eddie
Mateo of Bethlehem Catholic in
Pennsylvania. Mateo, 5-foot-9 ½
and 188-pounds, was fantastic
during 1-on-1s, as his
explosive speed and athleticism
dominated the afternoon. During
the combine events Mateo had a
4.66 40, 4.49 shuttle, 89
broad, 27.5-inch vertical, and
16 reps at 150-pounds.

Also
deserving special mention was
sophomore Jelani Jenkins of Good
Counsel High School in
Maryland. Jenkins, 6-foot-0 and
203-pounds, possesses great
running back skills and showed
them off during the 1-on-1s.
He also had a 28-inch vertical,
4.60 40, 88 broad, 4.58
shuttle, and 23 reps at
150-pounds.

The
last award of the afternoon went
to DB MVP sophomore Nick
Williams of The Hun School.
Williams, 5-foot-10 and
172-pounds, has spectacular
coverage skills and very
impressive feet. He also had a
28.5-inch vertical, 4.41
shuttle, 4.85 shuttle, and 22
reps at 150-pounds. Deserving
special mention at the defensive
back position was sophomore
Torian Phillips of Port Richmond
High School in New York.
Phillips, 5-foot-10 and
165-pounds, used an impressive
set of skills to lockdown most
of the wide receivers in
attendance. He had a 30.5-inch
vertical, 4.71 40, 89 broad,
4.51 shuttle, and 13 reps at
150-pounds.
