New England May Be Cold, But They Can Play Some Football!

NUC NEW ENGLAND, INDOOR ACTION SPORTS CENTER, GREENFIELD, MA- 4/15/07

The National Underclassmen Combine moved North to New England, and despite inclement weather, enjoyed a favorable turnout and a number of impressive performances.  Leading the charge was the Overall MVP, sophomore defensive end J. Forest West of Salisbury High School in Connecticut.

West, 6-foot-1 and 223-pounds, left no doubt that he was the best participant in New England.  He is a great athlete, very strong, fast and has a great future as a defensive end.  During the combine events, he finished with 21 reps at 185-pounds, a 31.5-inch vertical, 9’7 ½” broad, 4.49 shuttle, and 4.94 40.

Even though he didn’t win the Overall MVP, sophomore Kristopher Patterson of Xavier High School in Connecticut left with his own piece of hardware after winning the DL MVP.  Patterson, 6-foot-1 and 282-pounds, was impressive during 1-on-1’s, and had 20 reps at 185-pounds, a 21 ½-inch vertical, 5.52 40, and 5.12 shuttle.

Staying on the defensive side of the ball, the LB MVP went to sophomore Martin Hypodite of Wakefield Memorial High School in Massachusetts.  Hypodite, 5-foot-10 ½ and 202-pounds, was completely dominant during 1-on-1’s, which included bump and running two running backs right into the ground.  He also had 22 reps at 150-pounds, a 4.50 shuttle, 4.86 40, 8’10” broad, and 30 ½-inch vertical.

Two defensive backs stood out throughout the event, but at the end, the MVP went to sophomore Isiah Bell of Windsor High School in Connecticut.  Bell, 5-foot-9 ½ and 172-pounds, set himself apart during the 1-on-1’s, but also had 22 reps at 150-pounds, a 4.59 shuttle, 8’3” broad, and 27 ½-inch vertical.  The other defensive back that left his mark was sophomore Steven Grassa, 5-foot-10 ½ and 179-pounds, of BB & N in Massachusetts.  Grassa had a 4.47 shuttle, 4.88 40, and an extremely impressive 32 reps at 150-pounds.

The deepest position at this event was likely at quarterback, where a number of players stood out.  Winning the QB MVP was freshman Sean McQuillan, 6-foot-3 and 197-pounds, from Glastonbury High School in Connecticut.  McQuillan was excellent during passing drills and has the potential to be a top dual-threat quarterback prospect, especially considering he is only a freshman.  He also had a 4.57 shuttle, 4.98 40, 26 reps at 135-pounds, and an 8’1 ½” broad.

The Freshman MVP went to another quarterback, Mike Orloff from The Governor’s Academy in Massachusetts.  Orloff, 6-foot-2 and 183-pounds, has a great future and showcased this ability during 1-on-1’s.  He also had a 30-inch vertical, 8’6” broad, 4.42 shuttle, 4.70 40, and 29-reps at 150-pounds.

Two other quarterbacks that deserve a mention are sophomores Billy Ragone and Joshua Carrington.  Ragone, 6-foot-0 and 171-pounds, is from Chesire High School in Connecticut and impressed throughout the day, while Carrington, 5-foot-10 ½ and 162-pounds, is from John D. Bryant High School in Massachusetts and is more of a dual-threat player.  Carrington also had a 4.81 40 and 4.46 shuttle, and performed very well during passing drills and 1-on-1’s.

Another running back that stood out was sophomore Mitchell Davis, who comes from the before-mentioned Windsor High School Davis, 5-foot-8 and 152-pounds, caught our attention during 1-on-1’s, after performing well at the combine events.  He finished with a 4.62 shuttle, 4.85 40, 16 reps at 150-pounds, 8’3” broad, and 28.5-inch vertical.

The top wide receiver in attendance was sophomore Sean Sylvia of Dartmouth High School in Massachusetts.  Sylvia, 5-foot-10 ½ and 170-pounds, was electric during the 1-on-1’s and made several impressive circus catches.  He also had a 29.5-inch vertical, 8’4 ½” broad, 489 40, and 4.51 shuttle.

And finally, Windsor High School was represented on the MVP stand again with sophomore OL James Fullana.  At 5-foot-10 ½ and 290-pounds, Fullana showed excellent technique for a player of his size, and impressed ruing 1-on-1’s.  The sophomore also had a 5.37 shuttle and 15 reps at 185-pounds.
